  • How to setup and use APPlicator:

Download a full copy of this guide

    1. Pair your APPlicator to your iPad via Bluetooth. Press any button on your APPlicator to wake it. When the APPlicator is looking for a device to pair with, the LED display box will show moving lights. On your iPad go to “Settings” then “Bluetooth”. You should see an option named APPlicator followed by a series of numbers (the unique number series is stated on the label on your bottom of your APPlicator). Click on that to begin the pairing process.

    2. The APPlicator has 4 sockets for plugging in switches. The default settings for each of the sockets are as follows:

    • Socket 1 — Space
    • Socket 2 – Enter
    • Socket 3 — ~1
    • Socket 4 — ~3

The default settings cover the majority of switch accessible apps (HelpKidzLearn and Inclusive software use “space” and “enter”). For almost all switch accessible apps, if your switches don’t work when plugged into sockets 1 and 2, try them in sockets 3 and 4.

    3. You may want to change the settings to one of the 24 other commands that work with the APPlicator. These commands are shown on the cheat sheet on the back of the unit, along with a letter or number code for each. For example, you may want to take a picture using the camera, which is set by sending a “volume up” command (code H) when the camera app is open.

    A. First, select the switch socket that you would like to program by repeatedly pressing the channel button (CHAN). The LED light will illuminate on the selected socket.

    B. When a switch socket is selected, the current setting is shown in the LED display box. When the socket that you want to change has been selected, repeatedly press the mode button until the desired command code appears on the LED display box.

    4. If you have a student who has difficulty lifting their hand off a switch, you can enable single shot mode so the APPlicator only outputs a single keystroke regardless of how long a switch remains pressed. Single shot mode is set for each switch socket individually.

    A. Press hold the CHAN button until the LED display box shows either one horizontal line or three horizontal lines. This indicates what mode that switch socket is set to. One horizontal line indicates single shot mode, and three horizontal lines indicate repeating mode (the default mode).

    B. Press the CHAN button again to move to the other switch sockets to see what mode each socket it set to.

    C. To change the mode of a switch socket, move to that socket then press the MODE button. The LED display box will toggle between single shot mode and repeating mode.

    5. Once your APPlicator switch sockets have been programmed, you may want to lock the unit to avoid any being accidentally changed. This is particularly useful when sending a device home with a student or setting it up for a teacher who will only use certain settings.

To lock the unit, press and hold the CHAN and MODE buttons simultaneously until the letter L appears on the display. To unlock the unit, press and hold the buttons again until the display box shows the letter U.

    6. The Applicator has a dedicated Music Mode function that temporarily overrides your switch settings to ones that work directly with iTunes. To put the APPlicator into Music Mode, press and hold the keyboard button until the green LED light below the music symbol illuminates. In Music Mode the switch sockets are programmed to:

    • Socket 1 – Play / pause
    • Socket 2 – Skip forward
    • Socket 3 – Skip backward
    • Socket 4 – Play for 10 seconds (ideal for cause and effect or early switch use)

To get out of Music Mode and return your switch sockets to their previous settings, press and hold the keyboard button again until the green LED light below the music symbol turns off.

    7. The iPad recognizes the APPlicator as an external keyboard, so the on-screen keyboard will not automatically deploy as it usually would. To bring up the on-screen keyboard when an APPlicator is paired with an iPad, briefly press and release the keyboard button once. To get out of the on-screen keyboard, briefly press and release the keyboard button again.

*This function will only deploy a keyboard if the iPad is in a situation where it is expecting to receive keyboard input

    8. There is a port on the side of the APPlicator to charge the unit using the cable provided. The APPlicator can still be used while charging.

    9. Whenever the APPlicator is idle for 30 minutes, it will automatically go into sleep mode. Press any button or switch to wake it again. If you wish to power down the APPlicator so switches cannot be accidentally activated (ideal when transporting the unit and switches can be banged around), press and hold the MODE button until all four switch socket LEDs light up. To turn it on again, press any button on the unit.

    10. iOS7 and later operating systems include the Switch Control feature within iPad settings, enabling switches to be used to navigate the iPad interface and provide independent switch access to iPad Apps. The APPlicator is fully compatible with this feature. For assistance setting up Switch Control, please see the How To Set Up Switch Control On The APPlicator document.
